- AT&T Pantech Burst hands-on at CES 2012
Pantech has been going after the budget-conscious subscribers on AT&T for quite some time now, but it now it finally has the opportunity to do the same thing on Ma Bell’s network that it did with Verizon: offer a cost effective handset with LTE included. And we have to say: we were overall quite impressed both with the phone’s feel and laundry list of specs. For $50 with a two-year commitment, the newly announced Burst — available in both black and red — offer a 1.2GHz dual-core Scorpion CPU, Android 2.3 (which Pantech confirmed to us that it will be upgradeable to ICS at some point in the future), 5MP rear camera with LED flash and 720p HD video capture and 2MP front-facing cam.
Our first impression was rather positive. The 4-inch display will be a convenient option for most, and the Super AMOLED makes it bright and colorful. It felt comfortable in the hand and we enjoyed the smooth design and tapered sides. As always, we were disappointed in the lack of a dedicated camera button, though we can’t say it surprises us anymore — it seems as though Pantech typically shies away from that option. We’re not huge fans of the proprietary OS, as mentioned in our review of the Pantech Pocket, but during our brief time with the device, it seems to be incredibly speedy and void of bugs. Check out the gallery below for plenty more angles.

- Pantech Element hands-on at CES 2012

The Pantech Element has been hanging around the rumor mill for quite some time, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when we saw it show up at the AT&T Developer Summit keynote earlier today. All of the specs were right on with what we’d heard before: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU, 8-inch TFT XGA display, 5MP rear camera / 2MP front-facing, 6,400 mAh battery for over 12 hours of high-use battery life and of course, waterproof with IP57 certification. We got a little clarification on what Pantech means by this, and it turns out that the tablet can be submerged in up to one foot of water for thirty minutes without batting an eye.
Playing around with the tablet, we were surprised by its light weight and classy look. It was incredibly glossy, however, which was painfully obvious by the number of times we felt compelled to wipe smudges off the front and back. The ports of entry were all covered appropriately by secured plastic flaps, but it’s necessary in order to keep water or other liquid from getting inside. The tablet runs on Android 3.2, and in our limited time with the device felt smooth and without lag. Overall, it felt as though the tablet certainly fit the price range, which isn’t something we were able to say about the $600 (on contract) HTC Jetstream. The Element will be available starting January 22nd for $300 with a two-year commitment, though AT&T is running a limited promotion in which you can get both the Element and the Pantech Burst together for $250. Take a look below to check out some up close and personal images.

- Sony set to launch gorgeous Xperia S at CES?Hot on the heels of the Xperia Ion launch chez AT&T this morning, it would seem Sony may have yet another trick up its sleeve in the form of the Xperia S. While nothing is official until Sony tells us so, the newest — and if looks alone count — and nicest Xperia packs a 1280 x 720 4.3-inch display, MSM8260 dual-core thrumming away at 1.5Gz, and a 12 megapixel shooter that’ll capture at 1080p. Sadly the word is that it’ll launch in the second quarter running Android 2.3 and not our beloved Ice Cream Sandwich. Design-wise, the Xperia S looks like others in its family with the gentle curve in the back but what immediately caught our eye is the small translucent lit — notification with this would look brilliant — bar toward the bottom. Here’s hoping this is the real deal, and if so we’ll be back in a few hours with a load of vids and pics of it in action.

SEMC Blog | Email this | Comments - Samsung announces new camcorder range: QF20, F80 and ruggedized W300
Not satisfied with unveiling a whole bunch of point-and-click shooters, Samsung’s also unveiled a a refreshed set of camcorders for 2012. First up, the QF20 and Q20 totes the same switch grip features of its predecessor and are capable of 1080i HD video, while packing 20x optical zoom, a touchscreen display plus a medley of requisite artistic effects. The rough and tumble W300 and W350 are for the sporting videographer; dust-proof, shock-proof to two meters and water-proof to up to five meters. It records 1080 HD video, with an optional floating bumper accessory incoming for those Jaws homages. There’s also a five megapixel sensor and f/2.2 lens for your rugged stills. Finally, there’s the F80, which ups the optical zoom to 52x, 720p recording at 30fps. For those willing to upscale, there’s also a 1080i option through HDMI, which can also display any five megapixel stills snapped from great distances. No dates for when we’ll see these in stores — or price tags — but expect to see them this side of 2012.

- AT&T’s Watson coming to cars: won’t mind if you ask it if you’re there yet
AT&T aren’t holding back on the news here at CES, today it’s announced that it’s leaping into bed with Panasonic and QNX to bring it’s Watson speech-recognition technology to cars. Any cloud-connected car (it’s happening, folks) that’ll include the tech will respond to your voice commands to control your GPS or change channel when Rebecca Black starts playing on the radio. Initial testing of the tech is happening right now in Peachtree City, Georgia — with Ma Bell providing the network and the others supplying the hardware. There’s not too much more detail than that, but we can expect to see more of this in the coming months — and we’ve got PR for you after the break.

- Chaotic Moon shows Xbox Kinect / Windows 8-powered electric skateboard (video)
What if you combined a prototype Windows 8 tablet, an electric skateboard and Microsoft’s Kinect? Funnily enough, the folks at Chaotic Moon Studios wondered the same, and they didn’t stop there. Here at CES 2012, the outfit showcased a downright amazing wheeled machine, capable of reaching speeds as high as 32mph. It’s being labeled the Board of Awesomeness, but frankly, that’s an understatement. The company’s calling this the world’s first Xbox Kinect-controlled skateboard, utilizing video recognition, speech recognition, gesture recognition, localization data, accelerometer data, and other factors to determine what the user wants to do. Enough chatter — head on past the break to see this thing in action.
